A Scanner Darkly (2006) – at Donna’s POV

(Original) ... As part of the rehabilitation program at New Path, Arctor is renamed Bruce and put through psychological reconditioning treatments. Arctor has serious brain damage from his withdrawal from Substance D. To continue his rehabilitation, New Path sends Arctor to work at an isolated New Path corn farming prison.

On the other hand, Donna, using the name Audrey, has a conversation with some agent revealing the fact that Arctor’s well-being was sacrificed to enter a rehabilitation center, New Path, unnoticed as a real addict in order to find conclusive proof of their crimes.

(A new story begins.)

‘Bastards!’ Donna mumbled.

- At New Path Corn Farming Prison –

“Bruce! It’s time to spray corns. Go to section 4,” a guard shouted.
“I’m Bruce. Spray on section 4. Ok.”

“He’s a new psychologist. Take him to his Drug Treatment Unit.”
“Yes, Sir. Follow me, Doctor,” the guard replied.
A group of prisoners passed him.
“Thank you. So are there all my patients?”
He watched prisoners in white clothes, sprayers at their back; waked in a row heading to corn farm.
“Yes, Doc. You can meet them after they finish the spray. Here you are. It’s all yours then.”

He sat down her desk; checked prisoners’ files; and re-arranged their medicine bottles.
“Is everything alright, Doc?”
“Yes, thank you.”
After he checked the guard left, he dumped all pills in Bruce’s medicine bottle into a rubbish bin and filled with the ones that he took out from his bag.
‘You’ll be just fine, Bruce,’ he tapped his fingers on a lid of the bottle.

“Rubbish! She should be there, waiting for me …” someone shouted furiously from the outside of his clinic.
“Take him to the room and give him some sweets!”
“Yes, Sir!”
Few guards took that shouting prisoner and locked him in a room with electric wires. Few seconds later, guards dragged him out: he was wriggled like a worm.
A prisoner who sat in front of the psychologist looked at his enlarged eyes and said,
“Christine left me as well… She left me because of me being an evil… she abandoned me.”
He held his right hand and said, ”You will be here for me, won’t you? I know you will. You will be right here every time I come here.” He smiled and took pills from his hand.
After he left, he walked to the cabinet to get a medicine for a next patient.
‘It’s definitely BPD –borderline personality disorder. So most of them had serious brain damages from their withdrawal from Substance D, huh? Bloody bastard! So you think there is no better man to grow blue flowers than them.”
“Hi, I’m Bruce. It’s nice to meeting you. So you’re a new doc, huh?”
He turned and looked at him: his face, ear, shoulder, chest, hand, and knee. He was just standing like a statue but it seemed he did not care at all. He kept talking and talking.

After the work, he came into his room;

took off a high-tech scramble suit; lied down on a bed.
The he looked at the moon in the sky thru the window and recalled the time when Arctor was together; hugging a white-silver cushion on a big sofa.
Then his last moment was reminded as well: a face in such horrible pain.
‘I can’t forget his face suffering terribly from Substance D addiction in my car. I shouldn’t drop him off at New Path. Ha~ Arctor… Arctor. You can’t be Arctor again, can you?’

Few days later, Bruce went to corn farm to spray again.
“Hmm… what’s this smell? It’s different from yesterday’s.” He was curious about some sweet smell coming from left row of corm plants.
He followed the smell and found thousand and thousand of small blue flowers between corn plants.
“A death rising from the earth, from the ground itself, in one blue field. Why I’ve never seen them before.” He took a big breath in and slowly closed the eyes.
He suddenly felt something on his hair.
“What the… An aphid???” he hardly rubbed his head.
Few seconds later, “what the hell was that?”
He realized there was no aphid on his head, so do flowers.
“It’s gone. But it was here.”

In the afternoon on the same day, Bruce went to see a psychologist for medicine.
It always took longer than other every time Bruce went in the clinic.
“Ok then I’ve gonna go now.”
“Bruce!”
He grabbed his hand; put it on his chest and said,
”Remember our secret. I’m Donna. And you’re Arctor. We’re friend and I do care about you; that’s why I’m here.”
“I’m Arctor and you are… Donna. Donna.”
He gave a strange look to him. He never understood the reason for his sadly-looking smile.

Another few days later, a psychologist went to the central police station to see a police chief.
“So how our Bruce is doing? Do you think he is till capable to carry this?”
“Yes. Well we can’t stop now, anyway.”
“Well well well… Just remember your job is to find where the blue flowers are using Bruce. And then I’ll take care of Bruce and flowers. Got it?”
“You don’t have to keep remind me that,” he grabbed his bag and raised his body.
“Was there any contact from Donna to Bruce?”
“Uh?” he suddenly stopped moving and replied, “No, I haven’t noticed anything from either Bruce or Donna. Are you sure a girl named Donna will come after him?”
“I’m sure she’ll bust her ass to get him out of there and ruin our plan. We’ll see.” The psychologist left the room.
“Do you think we can trust that psychologist?”
“We’ve got no choice mate. It’s the only place not monitored by our intensive high-technology surveillance. And there must be a reason for it.”

At that time, Bruce was lined up with other prisoners in the field. The spray day came again.
“Jeff, you go to section 2 and Brain you…”
“Bruce. I’ll go to section 2.”
“What? Hmm… so you wanna go to section 2. Ok! Bruce goes to section 2 and Jeff goes to section 3. Next …”
“Bruce. Go to section 2.”
It is a huge corn farm – sun sets by the time you finish the spraying job. Corn plants are much taller than a height of ordinary man and bulky enough to cover one’s body.
He carefully walked along a row of corn plants and trusted his keen sense of smell.
He stopped and looked down.
“Yes there you are. A death rising from the earth again,” he went down on bended knee.
“A present for my friend,” he hid one of blue flowers in his boot.

- At Donna’s room in New Path Corn Farming Prison –

“I’m Donna and you’re Arctor. We’re friend and I do care about you; that’s why I’m here.”
“I’m Arctor and you’re Donna. We care about each other and it’s our secret.”
“Yes, Yes.”
Donna had to keep remind him about his identity and values of friendship between them. He sometimes had impulsive actions when he felt Donna did not care enough and was not ‘there’ enough, but it was manageable for him after they spent long time together.
“We’re going to have a Thanks-giving party at the Santa Ana facility. You and I are going together. I’m not a psychologist but will be and you’re not Bruce but be Bruce for a moment for me. Ok? Will you do it for me?”
“Sure. I like Donna. You’re friend Arctor will be Bruce.”
When Donna was about to approach a door to go out, Arctor stopped her.
“Donna!”
He turned her back. Arctor took the blue flower from his pocket and said,
“Happy Thanksgiving, Donna.”

- After discovered that New Path is responsible for the manufacture and distribution of Substance D by growing blue flowers at the corn farm –

“I’m agent Ross and he’s my partner agent Louis. You’ve must got a message from my chief to hand them over to us. Is that the lot?”
“It's sick-making that you guys are being taking so much for doing so little. It’s over there. Take it and get out of my sight!”
One agent tabbed the other agent’s shoulder and walked towards a pile of black bags. They grabbed and threw them into back of the van.
“Just be careful with them,” the police officer spat out the words and marched out of the field.

In the van, agent Louis looked checked the back to see how far they’d been driving from the farm.
“Are you alright? Don’t worry I think we’re safe now,” and agent Ross grinned at him.
“I guess you’re right. They were fooled into believing that we were actually from the secret government agency.”
“So what was your dream?”
“Move to North, Living in a farm near the mountains… in a cabin.”
“Let’s go. Let’s go to North… Donna.”
Both Donna and Arctor laughed and drove the van to the North.

I think there is a theme of nature that comes through in the movie. It is about understanding the Shinto religon, where there are gods in living things and other things like trees, forests and lakes. It is about respect for nature and the living things.

The Magic Faraway Tree adventure

Last part to story.

The group ran up the beach to the icecream stall. "What shall I have?", said Silky "Look what delicious flavours there are" said Bessie. The group got their icecream's they wanted and sat down under the shade of the tree's near the beach, licking their delicious icecream's. After they had finished their icecream's, they wondered what to do next. So they got up and chased each other around the tree's and up the sand dunes until they were all quite tired. They sat down on the beach and then Tim said, "Look at the canoes over there". And Fanny said "Oh how I would like to ride in the ocean!" Just then, the canoes and the paddler boat drifted into the sea shore by themselves. "Thats amazing" said Silky. The children and Silky, Moonface and the Saucepan Man walked down to the sea. Jo and Bessie got into one canoe, Fanny and Silky got into another, and the Saucepan Man and Moon Face got into a paddler boat. Cousin Tim who didn't want to be left out managed to squeeze into Fanny and Silky's canoe. The children took the oar's and paddled out into the ocean, with the paddler boat that had Saucepan Man and Moon Face not far behind. They rowed around the beach, and it was quite fun sailing across the water, the children seemed to think. Suddenly, the canoes changed into seagull's and the oar's turned into big wings, and the paddler boat the Moon Face and Saucepan Man were riding in turned into a large pelican and the children were amazed! The seagull's and the pelican flapped their wings and flew up into the sky, with the children on their backs, and flew across the land of Nature. The children clung on the birds, and looked at the views around them. They could see the beach where they were playing at, and other things like beautiful waterfalls that turned into rivers and flowed into the lake. They could even see other folk of the land of nature, walking along the paths and going to their homes. The birds swooped lower and flew down to the ground. The children got off the birds, and Moonface and the Saucepan Man got off the pelican and walked back down the path in the land of nature. Jo looked at his watch. It was nearly 5 o'clock in the afternoon. Cousin Tim said that he had enough of the land of nature and wanted to go home. The other's agreed. Life in the land of nature was exciting, but it was also quite exhausting. The children walked back to where they arrived, thanking the kind pixie's on the cute rabbit's for showing them the way back to the hole in the cloud. The children climbed down the ladder of the Faraway Tree and the tree folk, that is Silky, Moon Face and Saucepan Man followed them down. They came to Moon Face's room and Moon Face opened the door. The children were quite tired, so they decided to go home. Moon Face gave them cushions to sit on, and then the children said "good bye" to Silky and Saucepan Man, and then Moonface said "it was nice to have an adventure with the children". The children slid down the slippery slip, through the door at the bottom of the tree and stood up. The squirrel came to pick up their cushions and bring them back to Moon Face. The children ran back through the Enchanted Wood, with the tree's talking to each other. They arrived back home, all of them tired, but excited with the adventure they had in the land of nature. That's the end of the story. The End.

Shishigami changed to the god of death because of his anger. All creatures that touch with Shishigami’s power began being dead and the green forest changed into the black and white colour. Although people could be free to pass the forest, they were reluctant to go there. For some reasons or other, it chilled their blood to think of it and it was gooseflesh. Time had slipped along and people ceased to visit there. Also, the battle between humans and nature had covered up far in the distance of people’s memory.

Jiko Bou became the leader of Emishi tribe after he gave the head of the Shishigami to the emperor. One day, Tatarigami appeared his village again. Tatarigami destroyed the village and killed people randomly.
“Hiisama, Hiisama! That’s Tatarigami!” A man came to the female shaman of the village.
“Um…” She did not say anything and just watched that Tatarigami destroyed their village for a while. Then, She handed over a gourd bottle to the man. “ Sprinkle water in it on Tatarigami. It is the water of the lake where Shishigami lived in.” Hiisama said.
When he threw the bottle to Tatarigami and the huge body fell down with a thundering noise. That night, there was a meeting. Jiko Bou and some elders of Emishi tribe conferred with Hiisama about the matter.
“What can we do for it?” An ender asked Jiko Bou but Jiko Bou kept silence and looked up Hiisama. After a while, Hiisama opened her lips.
“It is sure that Shishigami is still finding his neck. Go to Tataraba to meet Ashitaka. And tell him the key is in the pendant.”

Ashitaka had lived in Tataraba after Shishigami lost his head and dissuaded Eboshi making matchlocks. He decided to go to see San when he heard the message from Hiisama. Ashitaka had tried to meet San several times before but he never met her.
“ Hiisama was sure that Princess Mononke is with the Shishigami’s body. And she also said the pendant will help you.” The messenger from Emishi told Ashitaka.
So Ashitaka went to the forest and shouted.
“Ashitaka came to see the forest. I’m going to go to find Shishigami’s head. I want to go with you, San.” But nobody answered.
“ I’m telling you again. I want to revive the forest before Shishigami’s anger is getting bigger.”



Clattering, clattering. There was a small sound somewhere.
“Kodamasama! You are alive! Can you show me the way to San?” Ashitaka asked.
Kodama brought him to the deep forest. He was frightened to see a wretched plight of the forest. Ashitaka arrived around the lake where the Shishigami cured him before under the guidance of Kodama but the lake already dried up.
“ Why are you here? What do you want?” San shouted.
“San, I’m going to find the head. I wanna go with you.” Ashitaka held out his hand.
“I heard that his head is inside of the emperor’s palace. We have to bring back his head. It’s the only way to stop Shishigami’s anger. If nobody does it, he will make another Tatarigami.” He said to San.

Boom-boom. It was the sound of the drum from a distance. Ahitaka and San lied down flat on top of the mountain to review the situation.
“ I attack with my brothers first.” San told Ashitaka.
“That’s Princess Mononoke. With wolves!”.
“ Shoot the arrow to the enemy!” The soldiers shouted.
Several hundreds of arrows poured down. San and wolves attacked the soldiers in full fling.
“ Prepare matchlocks! Shoot the matchlocks!” The soldiers prepared the matchlocks.
Bang! Bang! There sounded the matchlocks in places.
“No!” San cried. A wolf fell down. Poured bullets disturbed Ashitaka and San to go inside.

Bang! It was an earsplitting roar.
“ That’s Eboshi. The gang of Eboshi!” The place was an utter bear garden. Eboshi and her gangs came to help Ashitaka and Princess Mononoke.
“ Lady Eboshi, how…?” Ashitaka asked.
“ I saw you when you left the village. Don’t ignore me. I have a new weapon instead of my arm.” She winked at him. She lost one of her arm during the battle with Moro and Animal spirits.
Gunpowder exploded here and there and the soldiers had fallen down.
“Oh!” Eboshi yelled. A soldier attacked her from the side of her injured arm.
“Make off!” San ran at a tear to save Eboshi.
“Hahahaha...Princess Mononoke saved me. It’s unbelievable. Hahaha…” Eboshi laughed on the ground.
“ I still hate you but just you are one of our numbers now…” San made an effort to avert her eyes from Eboshi.
“San, Come here! His head is in it!” Ashitaka called her.
There was a box. It looked very heavy and firm as a rock. San held back an urge to open it but it wan not opened. There was a small hole in front of the box.
“Ah, pendant! San, give me your necklace!” Ashitaka told San.
“This one? “ San gave him the pendant that she was given from Ashitaka before.
Ashitaka put the pendant in the hole and the lid was opened. They found Shishigami’s head at last.
“We found it!”

Just then, they saw that something which is exceedingly huge covered the sky came up to them with breakneck speed over the mountain. It was the body of the Shishigami that was in the forest. The place that Shishigami’s body passed along was full of sticky fluid and that place was burned away.
“Don’t touch with that! Run for your lives! Go into the water!” San shouted urgently.
Shishigami, finding his head, took life of all creatures that were on the way to get to his head and burned them away as if he never let them revive.
“San. Hurry up. We have to give the head to Shishigami right now!” Ashitaka said.
San and Ashitaka lifted up Shishigami’s head.
“Here is your head. Take it!” They shouted.
The black body stopped moving and the sticky fluid poured on Ashitaka and San at the moment.
“Shishigami covered Princess Mononoke and Ashitaka!” The people shouted.
There was a silence for a while.

“ Oh! Falling down!” The body of Shishigami rose high and then fell down into the water. Excessively huge storm swept off the environs. The storm put out the fire which was burning the palace. After that, it was very quiet and the surface of the water was calm. The forest was restored to its colour. More and more. Getting greener.
“Oh, it’s great. Shishigami was the spirit that makes flowers bloom.” Someone was full of admiration.
“San, San. Look.” Ashitaka told her. They looked up at the green forest.
“ The forest is alive again but it is not Shishigami’s forest anymore. Shishigamisam passed away.” San said.
“No, I don’t think so. He isn’t dead. This, he gets to be himself. He is the god of life and death.” Ashitaka said. “He told me ‘live on’. San, Come with me”
“I like Ashitaka but I haven’t forgiven people yet.” San answered.
“Shishigamisama told us. Humans have to live with nature. Let’s try together.” Ashitaka told San again.
“ You saved my life. I thank to you.” Eboshi appeared.
“ Let’s do it all over again. Let’s build a better place. Of course with nature. San, Can you help us?” Eboshi asked San. San hesitated for a while but answered soon.
“ I don’t want to help you but…if it is Shishigami’s idea…” San made an effort to avoid Eboshi’s eyes but she smiled quietly.
Ashitaka and San looked at and smiled at each other.

Finally,the peace came to the forest and the people.

They found great illumination through the death of Shishigami.

about Princess Mononoke by Sunghee Kim.

Hello, all. I chose ‘Princess Mononoke’ which is written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki in 1997. This story is about the struggle between humans and nature. I wrote the story after Eboshi cut the Shishigami’s neck and Jiko Bou ran away with it. The desolate forest by the people who destroyed the forest for their advantage. I set up the story that Ashitaka meets San again so that he cooperates with her to find the Shishigami’s neck and they lead to the harmony between humans and nature. Because I think it is a great pity that Ashitaka lives in the iron foundry and San leaves in the forest.

Setting up the characters:

Ashtaka – an Emishi prince who was meant to become leader of his tribe but now, he lives in Tataraba Iron village to dissuade Eboshi making matchlocks.

San – Princess Mononke. a girl who is raised by Moro,

the wolf god. After Moro died, she still lives in the forest with Moro’s pups.

Eboshi - the strong-willed and independent leader of Iron village. She lost her arm but does not despair of making matchlocks

Jiko Bou - an Imperial agent traveling in the disguise of a monk who was assigned bythe Emperor to capture the forest spirit's head. Now, he is the leader of Emishi village.

Shishigami - the ancient spirit of the forest.

He is in deep forest and tries to find his
neck.

A Supernatural Helper ( Narrative)

In Cigars of the Pharaoh, Tintin chases after an international group of drug distributors through the Middle East and India. He is able to capture most of the cartel members, but not the mysterious leader, who falls down a cliff and disappears. We now follow Tintin as he travels to China to crack the drug cartel at great jeopardy.

At the beginning of ‘The Blue Lotus’ adventure, Tintin and his friend Snowy are in India invited to be the guests of the Maharaja of Gaipajama. Within the palace, Tintin meets the famous fakir, Ramacharma, who has the power to reveal the secret of one’s future. He perceives that Tintin’s life will be at stake in the near future. Therefore, he teaches Tintin how to say the inscription for a magic crystal that can be used to conjure the spirit-Shiro. Shiro is a spirit boy, who died of leukemia at the age of eight and has been fostered by Ramacharma as a supernatural helper.


Tintin is asked to meet a businessman from Shanghai in the palace gallery. Unfortunately, the informer is shot by a poison dart when explaining the purpose of his visit. The poison of madness, the Rajaijah juice is used by the opium gang against their enemies. But before he goes mad, he mumbles two words “Shanghai” and “Mitsuhirato”.

Tintin travels to Shanghai in order to find out the source and there he risks his life to fulfill his desire of bringing down the drug cartel. With the help of Shiro, he is able to escape from danger and satisfy his will. Tintin makes his new foe in defending his young Chinese houseboy from Gibbons, a Western businessman and racist bully while he is on his way to meet a Japanese businessman, Mitsuhirato. Gibbons is also a friend of Dawson, the corrupt police chief of the Shanghai International Settlement. In Gibbon’s fury, he and Dawson begin making life difficult for Tintin.

In the same evening, by accident, Tintin is caught and sent to the prison by Dawson’s patrol. They intend to beat Tintin up, for he hurt one of their mates before he is under arrest. During the attempt at retribution, Tintin only tries to avoid their attack as he is unarmed. Luckily, the Ramacharma’s words bring to his mind in a wink. He, then, retreats to a corner and hold up the magic crystal, saying the inscription loudly not sure if it would work. At once a queer wind blows a dank thick mist over the whole prison. Before it entirely envelopes Tintin, he gasps as a giant shadowy figure crawls towards the warders. Horrifying the warders, they panic and run to the exit. However, as the doorway is locked, one of them attempts to open it with his dagger, while the other two just stand there, doing nothing. Tintin throws a chair at the two, trying to knock them down.


With the assault, one falls, the other rushes at Tintin in his anger. Yet, the shadow instantly turns on him and emits a bloody red light as if it wanted to prevent him from harming Tintin. Under this strange beam, the warder looks enchanted and loses control of his body. Flung up into the air, he floats for a moment before dropping with a nasty thump into an unconscious heap.


Tintin, shocked at what he sees, hears a child’s whispering urging him to end his battle. Tintin follows the advice and aims a china vase at his last enemy beside the locked doorway, who shakes in his wet pants. The doorway bursts open and all the wind and mist vanish. Tintin is guided by the shadow to get out of the police station. At the street corner, Tintin asks the shadow if it is Shiro the boy spirit. And yet, the shadow only makes a fingered shape point at Tintin’s necklace where the magic crystal hangs.


Tintin doesn’t get the meaning and takes off the necklace for a clue. At that moment, a fresh light comes from the crystal and the shadow disappears with it suddenly. Despite Tintin attempts to use the crystal again, he receives no response. After a while, he recalls what he is told about Shiro, who becomes a shy spirit before a stranger and needs to be called back once a task is done. All the same, Tintin is extremely delighted to have such supernatural helper for his journey.

Shiro is the main contributor to Tintin’s final battle with the mastermind. As it turns out, without his aid, Tintin and the Wang family would be killed. Wang and his family are abducted. Wang is the leader of the brotherhood launched to fight against opium. Told by Mr. Wang’s servant that the Wang family is in trouble, Tintin attempts to save them. He goes to the Shanghai docks and conceals in one of the barrels that will be sent to the secret den of the opium cartel.


Although Tintin finds the Wang family once he arrives there, he is caught by Mitsuhirato, a corrupt Japanese Government secret agent and drug smuggler. Tintin is soon tied to a chair alongside the Wang family and introduced to the boss of the opium cartel. Tintin looks in disbelief at Rastapopoulos, once his friend, now obviously the mastermind.Taking order from Rastapopoulos, Mitsuhirato commands his underling to untie Mr. Wang’s son, who is insane under the effect of Rajaijah juice. He is given a sword to finish off his parents and Tintin.


When lunging at Tintin the necklace is cut and fallen. The magic crystal breaks into splinters and a grim fog comes from the remains, starting to fill up the whole room. Tintin calls out “Shiro” afraid that the spirit is harmed. He feels something moving towards him in the haze. Tintin is uncertain of what it is until the thing comes in sight. It turns out to be Shiro, a young boy with black hair in Indian cloths. He bows introducing himself. With Tintin’s relief, he would give Shiro a big hug if he was free to move. Tintin asks Shiro if he can untie him and the Wangs before their lunatic son has another attack. Shiro nods and says that there is an antidote to the Rajaijah juice in the den.

Tintin makes a plan that requires Shiro’s aid again. Nonetheless, Shiro expresses that he is not powerful as he used to be, due to the damage of magic crystal. With Shiro’s encouragement, Tintin conquers the madman and takes his sword and then runs at his enemies.However, Mitsuhirato points a gun to Tintin, takes the sword, and demands him to inject the Rajaijah juice into himself if he wants the Wang family unharmed. Tintin receives the needle from Rastapopoulos and gazes at him sadly reminded of the deception. Just as Tintin puts the needle into his forearm the bloody red light shines in the mist.

Tintin, familiar with that light, closes his eyes quickly as he is scared to be bewitched and knows he is about to be helped. The light fades away after a minute with two loud thumps. Before him, Mitsuhirato and Rastapopoulos are unconscious on the floor. The underling capitulates on knowing his masters have been overcome and offers the antidote to Mr. Wang’s son.


As they are all ready to leave the Chinese police break into the place, and with Rastapopoulos’s arrest, the drug ring is eventually brought down. Mitsuhirato’s embarrassing involvement with the cartel and Japanese espionage leads to Japan's withdrawal from the League of Nations.


Tintin bids farewell to all his Chinese companions at the pier and starts his return journey to India. And yet, he has to do the same thing to his intimate friend, Shiro on the ship. As a consequence of overspending the power in the last conflict, Shiro will turn into colorful bubbles at sunset. Tintin’s eyes are brimmed with tears on knowing the harsh truth. He understands that the departure of Shiro will be the fact though he still wishes that it was just a nightmare.

The sea-gulls wheel in huge flocks over the sea that looks extraordinarily beautiful under the reflection of the sunset. At the stern, Tintin’s tear stains sparkle with the rays of the setting sun. He stands beside Shiro, saying nothing, neither does Shiro. All they can hear is the sea-gulls’clamours. Finally, Shiro breaks the long silence by hugging Tintin from his right side for a second. To Tintin’s sorrow, he fails to ask Shiro why he can hug him as a spirit before Shiro’s departure. Shiro floats up into the darkening sky after his transformation. At that, the sea becomes fairyland and this picture will be embedded in Tintin’s mind forever.

Ideas on Tim's tale

I would like to live in the Paradise Beach if it were a real place. It is depicted as a sanctuary for the urban people who are tired of daily routine. ‘They were able to see sand dunes, and a golden sand beach filled with the most amazing things, like canoes, paddler boats and a cafe that always had food no matter how much food you wanted to eat’.

I never visited such beach before and cannot describe the beach like Tim does without visiting it in person. All the beaches in Hong Kong are very crowded and water there is soiled. I guess Tim must have gone to one of such beautiful beaches. As Edmond suggests, Tim should have attached some photos of the beach to his story. This may make the story more interesting and attractive.

I would like to ask you several questions regarding to your story, Alan.
Does Snowy have a unique talent of finding things? I wonder how he knows that the gold coins are in the supermarket. What is the relationship between Tintin and mysterious man? Why does Tintin take on the task and what reward he gets after fulfilling his mission? Your depictions of Tintin’s journey are explicit. In addition, you introduce a lot of places where I have never been in Hong Kong Island. I consider the display of the Hong Kong’s note and train tickets may give the initial idea of HK to the readers who never travel there.

Your story is quite interesting to me, Edmond. I am not familiar with the Japanese cartoons, so could you tell me what the Ninja is? Which cartoon you get the idea from? I realize that the concept of Naruto’s wizard trial comes from the western thrilling movie ‘1408’. It describes a man who encounters a sequence of supernatural things in the hotel room ‘1408’ and how he escapes from such nightmare. Apart from that, I also perceive that you turn the well-known hero ‘Batman’ into an antagonistic role in the story.

I would like to give some advice on your story. It is just my personal opinions; I hope you will not be offended by them. Firstly, Kakashi sensei and Naruto function as heroes in your story, don’t they? I have read several western heroic mythic stories; all the heroes are honest and honourable. Regarding to these points, Kakashi sensei should not have depicted as dishonest person. This would affect his heroic image. ‘"Um, it's way too expensive Naruto, just buy some fake diamond for the villagers in $2 shop is fine" ’. Besides, you should have looked through your work carefully before posting it here. Although I am not very good at English grammar, I find a lot of grammatical errors in your story. At last, I think Batman should have given some ordeals to the heroes before being conquered by them.

He's a boy who was born in Konohagakure. His parents were died by doing missions after he was born. He was trained up by his tutor Kakashi and he aims to be the best ninja in the world. There is a nine-tail fox lives inside him.

He's the famous ninja around Konohagakure. He has the SHARINGA which only the Uchiha clan has. Most of the people respect him in the village. His parents were dead by doing mission too. Therefore he understands and always comforts Naruto. Trys to train him to a good ninja.







Batman


Batman is famous of robbing at night in the Gotham City. No one knows his really identity. He uses the most advanced technology to complete his criminal mission. Alfred is his servant and supports him at the back, such as giving information and do the research before Batman acts.








Monkey.D.Kuffy

Monkey.D.Luffy and his gangs are sailors around the Pacific. However, their another secret identities are pirates. They often take orders to be a transportation for ninjas. The reason they become pirates is not for money or woman. They just want to be free in the ocean. Therefore, they're not real pirates.

When the sun rises, birds sing beautifully which call the naturals up. Naruto opens his eyes, he looks on his left hand side, where his teacher - Kakashi normally sleeps next to him. However, he finds that he disappears.
He gets up and has a stretch, looks around and sees all the gears are still inside his tent. After he dresses up, he hears a big bomb sound outside.

"Hey Naruto, we're heading to a place where is called Gotham soon. I got some fresh fruits and meat to prepare for this journey. Come and give me a hand!"
"Wait Kakashi sensei, where is Gotham? Why do we go there? How are we going to there?"
"You will know after you get there Naruto, pack up and I have booked the ship to there at 12pm. We only have 3 hours left to arrive at the harbor. Come on! You will experience a lot of new things during this journey, it's worth."










They leaves the camp site at 11pm, on the way to harbor, Naruto keeps asking what his training will be next. Because he wants to get stronger as soon as possible to be the strongest Ninja in the world. Naruto's parents died when he was born. His parents were famous Ninja and people respect them as a hero. Nine years ago, Naruto's father was Kakashi's tutor. During the second world ninja war. He sacrificed himself to save the village to interchange the peace. Before he was killed, he told Kakashi to look after his son, Naruto, and trained him as a good Ninja in he future. Therefore, Kakashi put all painstaking care into his hero's son.

When they see the ship, the bow of the ship is a bear head. A big skeleton head with a cross on the black canvas.

"Welcome to Golden Murri! It's the best ship in the world! You're so lucky to travel on it! Wahahahahaha!"
"Welcome! I'm sorry he's out stupid captain Luffy. Hi two lovely ninja, my name is Nami. The navigator on this ship. I know Mr Kakashi has already booked to go to Gotham City. The trip will last around 2 days from here. Hope you enjoy your trip! We have also got a doctor, cook, and entertainer. So if you need any helps just tell one of us!"



"Kakashi sensei, they're so pro! but I want to ask, are they pirates? Look at their canvas." Naruto whispers to Kakashi.
"Um, I'm not sure Naruto. But I think we can handle them if they really try to rob us. Don't worry, don't you believe in your strength?" Kakashi smiles to Naruto.

At the first night, Captain Luffy holds a welcome party for Kakashi and Naruto. They share their dream with each other.
"Hi guys! My name is Naruto! I want to be the best Ninja in the world! And my first target is beat up Kakashi sensei!"
"Hey Naruto! I'm Luffy! I have the same dream as you! I want to be the best Captain in the world. Although we pretend we are privates, we are not! We pretend we're privates after we nearly got vanished by a bloody animal in Gotham! His name is Batman! We found out we're too kind to people so we needed to pretend to be a bad guy!"
"Who is the Batman?" Naruto asks.
"Batman was once a superheros in Gotham. He usually comes out at night, just like a bat. And his gears are really designed like a bat. Therefore, people call him the Batman." Kakashi bends his head down and looks anxious.
"Kakashi sensei, how come you know so many information about that man?"
"Because he's famous, Naruto! You should read more newspaper rather than only train up your body!"
"Understand! Kakashi sensei!"
"By the way, how come your team would get vanished by Batman?" Kakashi asked Luffy.
"Well, one year ago, we traveled to Gotham city and wanted to fulfill our supplies for the next travel. However, Batman pretended he was a baggar and begged us to help him. So we took him to our ship. At night he turned into Batman and robbed our food and gold when we were sleeping. I was waken by the noise he made. We couldn't beat him as he had too many crazy weapons. He even destroyed our ship without any reasons! He must be jealous that we owned a big ship!" Luffy yelled.

On the second day afternoon, they arrive at Gotham's harbor.



"Hey Kakashi and Naruto! Good luck on Gotham! Remember to watch out the bastard!" Luffy and Nami remind.
"Thanks guys, we'll beat him when we meet him! Trust us!" Naruto says with graping his fist hardly.
"Alright let's go Naruto!" Kakashi says.

Naruto and Luffy hug each other. Naruto is very happy to meet a new friend who can admit his dreams. In his village, everyone tease at him when he tells his dream, only Kakashi appreciates this young kid has potentials and patience to fulfill his dream. Therefore, he wants to train up Naruto to help him.

"Kakashi sensei, what's our training here?"
"Um, I have thought one last night. Let's beat up Batman!"
"Oh! Are you sure!? Are we able to do that?"
"I'm not sure, but we can have a bet!" Kakashi stares at Naruto.

They walk around and find a hotel to stay for a week. Kakashi asks the counter for a room for 2 people.
"You're so lucky sir, there is one room left. Here is your key. The room is 1408. Enjoy your night."
Kakashi takes over the key and goes to the room with Naruto. After they unpack all the stuffs, they leave the hotel and find something to eat. They go into a cafe, sit down and order some sandwiches.



"Hey Alfred, I think I'll visit the jewel shop tonight. Prepare the gears for me later." A big man says.
"Sure my master, good luck tonight." Alfred replies.



"Hey Kakashi sensei, I want to visit the jewel shop as well. I want to see big diamonds!" Naruto yells on the street, Kakashi feels so embarrassed.
"Kakashi sensei, do you reckon if I buy one diamond for a souvenir?"
"Um, it's way too expensive Naruto, just buy some fake diamond for the villagers in $2 shop is fine."

They walk around, take photos, enjoying the fantastic time in Gotham. Naruto seems have already forgotten what is the purpose he comes to the city. Naruto discovers many new things that he has never seen in his village. He's so attracted by the luxury materials.

When they go back to the hotel, they observe there is something weird about the room 1408. The radio is turned on automatically; the clown in the picture moves; the liquid drops from the water tap is grape juice and the windows have disappeared.

"Kakashi sensei! Are we being attacked by magic skill!?" Naruto quickly gears up himself, prepare the attack from anywhere. He looks around, a chair is thrown towards him and he blocks it down. The water tap shoots on him and he dodges. The clown in the picture throws 3 knives behind him and Naruto dodges as fast as he can. But his right arm still get hurts by that. After those attack, he realize Kakashi is not with him. So he starts to clam down and close his eyes.

"Kai!" Naruto says it in his heart.
"Good job Naruto, you have passed the sudden magic skill test." Kakashi says.
"Phew, you have frightened me man, I was still in the shopping mood!"
"If you want to be the best ninja, you need to aware everything in anytime! Understand!?"
"Yes sensei!"



At mid night



"Bebubebuebu" Many police cars drive pass the hotel. It seems something happen.
"Wake up Naruto, your real task has come." Kakashi shakes Naruto head.
"Actually I didn't sleep at all, I have been waiting for this moment for a long time, sensei."
"Let's go then!" Kakashi and Naruto follows the police cars by running on the roof of all the buildings.

They chase and see the jewel shop where they visited in this afternoon is robbed. They see a sign on the wall which is a bat. Kakashi knows that robber must be Batman.

"Come with me Naruto, I know where he's."
"Where will he be sensei? How will you track him down?"
"Don't you forget what is my best magic skill? Hehehe."
"Oh yea! Calling the dogs from your recipe magic skill!"
"Ok...come on dogs! Smell the bat sign then track the ass down."

Batman is driving with his invisible car on the street.



That is his newest technology on earth. He suppose no one can arrest him and even find him. He drives to an old, huge building where locate in the country side of Gotham City.

"Hehehe, I reckon it's my best storage, how can a normal people imagine a rubbish building is a treasure building. And I have set the alarm on the top of the street, so when anyone step inside this are Alfred will know."

Bibibibibibibi

"Sir, someone has come inside your area." Alfred calls Batman.
"What the hell, how can it be!? Who are they?"
"Um, I don't know who they are, they run as fast as a deer."
"Shit! Give me their location."
"Sir, they're on East 167, I think they'll arrive at your place in 5 mins."
"Ok, I'll get ready to scatter those little beans. Prepare a hot bath for me Alfred, thank you."
"Sure sir."

Naruto and Kakashi have arrived at the old building. Kakashi collects his dog back in case their fierce bark will show their position. The dark, wierd environment gives them a heavy atmosphere. Dusts are all over the ground, spider webs are all stucked in every corner.

"Welcome strangers, I'm very happy to see people can chase behind me to here. Alright, tell me how can you do it." Batman speaks in the dark. Naruto and Kakashi see nothing.
"Come on Batman, I'm sure you cannot walk out this building tonight." Naruto replies.
"Oh what an arrogant kid, of course I do not walk out, I drive out, hahahaha." Batman teases.

"Kakebunshinotsutsu!"



Naruto uses his favorite skill to look for Batman. This skill can create many clones, so Naruto can look for Batman as fast as he can.

"Um, this kid seems to have some decent magic skills, damn it! He is going to see me soon." Batman is worrying about his hiding location.
Batman suddenly feels that someone is behind him.
"I find him sensei! He's on the second floor by the window." Naruto and Kakashi quickly rush there.
Of course, Batman won't do anything to stop them. He quickly fire them with two magnums. Naruto and Kakashi dodge the bullets.

"What the hell are those guys!?" Batman drops the guns immediately. Pick up two knives from his bag. He is going to fight by using his own hands.

"Naruto, beawear of the knives, don't get hurt! We should win by fighting."

"Hehe, easy guys." When the three guys get closer and closer. Batman turns the back of the knives towards Naruto and Kakashi.
"Laters, it's not a knife. It's a lazer gun!" Batman shoots. Naruto and Kakashi do not expect it. They have no where to hide and it's impossible to block the attack.

"Wahahahahaha, go back to your village ass, big city is not suitable for little mice to play." Batman laughs loudly.
"Do you really think that, huh?" Naurto is prepareing his skill "Rasenkan" behind Batman.
"What the...how could you don't get hurt!? You and your friend were obviously got attacked!" Batman starts to lose his mind.
"Don't you forget I made a lot of clones before? I hide three of them on top of the celling. Kakashi sensei and one of my clone is just a lure. It seems CITY MAN IS NOT THAT CLEVER. LITTLE BAT."
"Good job Naruto, it's just the ruse of inflicting an injury on myself to win the confidence of the enemy. It works!" Kakashi gives Naruto a thumb.
"Bullets can't get through my iron mail, what can you do!?" Batman points and yells at Naruto.
"Shut up and goodbye."



Naruto finally gives a shit to Batman, the power of Rasenkan is out of Batman's expectation. Batman was thrown out to serveral miles.
"You did it Naruto!" Kakashi put his hand on top of Naruto's head. "And your next task is to kill me!
"Are you seriously...sensei?"
"Nah, I'm just joking, it's time to go back home now."

Addition to the story: Exploring the land of nature. The Magic Faraway Tree story

The children and the treefolk that is Silky, Moonface and Saucepan Man looked around in wonder at the land of nature. As they stood on the path that connected the lakes and forest, some of the folk of the land of nature scurried past them. There were pixie's riding cute bunny rabbits that had fluffy tails, fairie's riding on ducks across the water on the lake, and elves busily watering the pretty flowers that were growing everywhere. "Hey, watch out!" said Bessie as an elf splashed water he was carrying in a watering can on her foot. "Let's have an adventure", said Tim and the other children nodded their heads and said "let's".
They walked along the trail, which wove its way around forests of beech trees, and beautiful vistas looking out to the sea and lakes. Saucepan Man's pots and kettles were clanging away as he walked. They stopped to hear some birds singing a tune in the trees. Moonface asked everyone if they would like a pop biscuit or google bun and the children said yes, so Jo unpacked his backpack and handed the group a pop biscuit each, and then gave everyone a cup and Fanny poured lemonade into the cups for everyone. Then after resting, the group got up and continued on their walk. They walked a little further and then Moonface said "be quiet" to Saucepan Man. Above the bird song, Moonface could hear the sound of the sea.
"We must be near the sea", cried the children. And sure enough when the group looked down the hill they were able to see sand dunes, and a golden sand beach filled with the most amazing things, like canoes, paddler boats and a cafe that always had food no matter how much food you wanted to eat. They raced down the hill, Moonface taking Silky's hand, and the Saucepan Man galloping along. When they got to the beach, they were greeted by blonde haired mermaids that offered them some sunblock and hats. "For me" said Silky. "Oh what lovely girls you are". One mermaid gave Saucepan Man a large colourful towel because he was a bit shy of taking his saucepan's off in front of the group. The group read the sign that was on the beach. "Welcome to Paradise Beach" it read. "Enjoy your stay". With that the children including cousin Tim took their t shirts off and waded knee deep in the warm waters of Paradise Beach. They laughed out loud as they saw Saucepan Man, Silky and Moonface lying under a sun umbrella, each on their own deck chair's. Just then there was a sound calling. "Ice's, who wants ice's!" rang out. It was the icecream man! The children rushed out of the water. Moonface, who was surprised at the noise, fell out of his deckchair.

Start of story

1. Cousin Tim comes to stay.

There was once a time a family of three children. They were Jo, Bessie and Fanny and they lived with their mother and father in a small house in the countryside. Their father went to work in the field each day, while their mother stayed at home to do the washing and cleaning, and to look after the children, who at times could be quite naughty and quarrelsome. One day mother received a letter. She didnt get many letter's and the children were quite inquisitive about who it was. "Your cousin Tim from NZ is coming to visit" she said. "Ooh" said the children. Tim was a few years older than Jo and a mischievious boy as was he, the children were pleased to have some company.

"Tidy up your room Jo", mother said. "And can you girls make a bed ready for your cousin please." "Golly" said Jo, "I wonder what Tim will think of the Enchanted Wood? I hope we can take him there" said the girls.
Cousin Tim arrived the next day. He jumped off his uncles 4 wheeler that Jo had ridden from the bus station in town and hugged everyone. "Hello Bessie!" "Hello Fanny!" "Nice to see you, Aunt Polly" he said. Fanny carried his bag inside and showed him to his room. "I can imagine nothing happens here" he said. "Life in the city is so busy."
The children took Tim to the window of Jo's room. "Do you see that forest over there" they said. "That's the enchanted forest. And in the middle of it is the Far Away Tree. All sort's of creature's live up the tree. And when you get to the top of the tree, there is a ladder that leads up through the hole in the cloud. Once you get through the cloud, you come to a different land."
"Golly" said Tim. "I wish we could go there. "We can go there when mother says we have finished our work" said Bessie. The children went to sleep in a state of excitement.

2. Up the Far Away Tree.
The next morning the sun came up and the children awoke. After eating breakfast at the table, the children made their beds and Bessie and Fanny organised the food they were going to take. The children set off for the Enchanted Wood with Jo carrying the backpack with the food and drink on his back. "Just wait til you meet our friends" said Jo to Tim. "There's Moon Face who has a face round like the moon, a fairy called Silky who is a kind little thing and Saucepan Man. He has all sorts of pots and kettles strung around him." "Moon Face has a slide called the slippery slip and he gives us cushion's so we can slide down the tree to the bottom."said Jo. "Ooh" said Tim
They entered the forest. It grew darker and the trees seemed to be talking to each other.Then they came to the Far Away Tree. "Wow!" "What a big tree" said Tim. "Let's climb it." The tree had a big base with branches of oak sprouting from its lower branches. Further up it had maple leaves and walnuts and plums hanging off its higher branches. The tree grows all sorts of different plants Bessie said. Its a peculiar tree.
The children climbed up the tree. Fanny said "Look out!" But it was too late. The Angry Pixie had seen Tim. He opened his kitchen window, and flung a heap of fruit scraps at him. "That'll teach you" the Angry Pixie said. "I don't want to see you again." The children climbed higher up. They soon came to the fairy Silky's door. Tim rang the bell and Silky opened the door. "Hello Jo" she said. "Hello Silky." said Jo. "This is our cousin Tim who has come to stay. He's having an adventurous time". "Welcome to the Far Away Tree" said Silky. "We are going to see Moon Face", said Jo. "Would you like to come? "Yes please" said Silky "and I'll bring some biscuits for everyone." So off they went climing through the branches. On ther way they went past Mr Watisname who was sleeping away on a deckchair. There was a noise coming down the tree. "Slish slosh, slish slosh" it went. "Can you hear that?" said Fanny "It''s Dame Washalot's water" said Silky. "Quick hide!" Tim wasn't quite as lucky as the others. The water splashed all over his clothes. "Never mind" said Bessie. "I'm sure Moon Face can lend you a towl." They soon came to Moonfaces house and Jo knocked on the door. Moon Face opened the door with a smile beaming on his face. "Hello there! We've brought our cousin Tim to meet you. "Hello Tim", said Moon Face. "I've got Saucepan Man here as well." They entered Moon Face's room. Moon Face's furniture was arranged caround the curve of the tree trunk and right in the middle was the slippery slip. Tim looked around the room. Sitting on the sofa was Moon Face's friend the Saucepan Man. It took several times before the Saucepan Man got Tim's name right and by then they were all in fits of laughter. "Let's have some Pop biscuit's" said Silky. So she got a plate from Moonfaces cupboard, put some Pop biscuit's on them and boiled the jug and got ready the cups of tea for everyone. Everyone sat down. Bessie handed round the Pop biscuit's. "Ooh how nice" said Tim as he put a Pop biscuit in his mouth. It went pop in his mouth and his mouth was full of delicious tasting flowing honey. "Moon Face, can you tell us what land is at the top of the tree now" asked Silky. "The land of nature" said Moon Face. "Oh how exciting" said the children. "It won't be here for long so if we want to go we should go now' said Moon Face. So after finishing their cups of tea, the 4 children, Silky, Moon Face and Saucepan Man got ready to go up to the new land.

3. The Land of Nature.
And so up they went, climbing up the ladder at the top of the tree and through the hole in the cloud, all seven of them went into the land of nature.
The land was the size of a large park. The sun shone brilliantly, sending its golden glow across the sky, with it's clear blue colour and cotton wool like clouds wisping across. The land was covered in hills and valleys, streams flowing into lakes, and rivers winding their way to the sea. There were orchards of apples, peaches and pears, with bee's humming along. This is delicious said cousin Tim as he plucked an apple from the tree and the others gathered around to see if they could pick one too. Further away there were forests healthily growing with birds cheerily chirping away, darting from tree to tree, their bright colours making a disply for all to see. Come on, lets explore said Jo to the others . So they wandered near the river and played in the sand on the beach.They saw fish jumping in the water and they dashed around the trees playing hide and seek.
All too soon, the weather seemed to change. Bird's stopped singing in the tree's. They sky got darker and a strange wind seemed to blow. "The land's moving on" said Bessie. "Hurry we have to go." So they rushed to the hole in the cloud and climbed down the ladder to the Far Away Tree. Soon they were all back in Moon Face's room. "Gosh it's nearly tea time and mother will be cross with us if we dont come home" said Jo. So they said goodbye to their friend's and went down the slippery slip, through the Enchanted Wood and back home for dinner.

I'm going to add a new story, in Donna's point of view.
(Original) ... As part of the rehabilitation program at New Path, Arctor is renamed Bruce and put through psychological reconditioning treatments. Arctor has serious brain damage from his withdrawal from Substance D. To continue his rehabilitation, New Path sends Arctor to work at an isolated New Path corn farming prison.
On the other hand, Donna, using the name Audrey, has a conversation with some agent revealing the fact that New Path is responsible for the manufacture and distribution of Substance D.

(New Story) Donna felt sorry for Arctor for being sacrifised himself, his well-being and his life by the government (or the Polica force). So she pretended as a psychologist by wearing a high-tech scramble suit and got into the New Path corn farming prison where Arctor is.
Due to his previous drug addiction, hirelationship with Donna and family history, he was suffereing with Borderline personality disorder (BPD) and Donna wanted to help him out - to get it through and to find the evidence for Police so he can get out of there, at least.

(Original) Arctor spots rows of blue flowers (the source of Substance D) hidden between rows of corn in a farm. Arctor hides one of the blue flowers in his boot, so that when he returns to the New Path clinic during Thanksgiving he can give it to...

(New Ending) ... Donna, who is an undercover police agent but, also, a friend.

Assignment one (Fanfiction,formative)

In Cigars of the Pharaoh, Tintin chases after an international group of drug distributors through the Middle East and India. He is able to capture most of the cartel members except the mysterious leader, who falls down the cliff. Some time following these incidents, his body has still not been discovered. At the beginning of ‘The Blue Lotus’, Tintin and his friend Snowy are invited to be the guests of Maharaja of Gaipajama in India. In Gaipajama’s palace, Tintin meets the famous fakir, Ramacharma, who has the power to reveal the secret of Tintin’s future. After that, Tintin is given a magic crystal that has the power to protect him from danger as it can be used to conjure the spirit-Shiro. Shiro is a 10 years old boy, who died of leukemia at the age of eight and has been fostered by Ramacharma as a supernatural helper since then. During their conversation, Tintin is asked to meet a Chinese guy from Shanghai in the gallery. All the same, when the guy explains the purpose of his visit to Tintin, he is shot by a dart that is full of the Rajaijah juice, poison of madness. The poison is used by the opium gang against their enemies. Luckily, before the guy becomes mad, he tells Tintin that he is needed in Shanghai. Hence, in order to find out what really happens, Tintin travels to Shanghai where the mastermind of the opium consortium, Mitsuhirato, tries to trip and kill him.
